A meditation technique that helps me when I'm feeling squirrely and can't get my mind to stop: I sit for two minutes in a quiet space, close my eyes, and rub my index finger and thumb together, paying very attention to the ridges and every nuance. Is my thumb touching my index finger or vice versa?
Another technique is with sound: What is the farthest sound I hear? What's the closest?
There is also Hakalau (peripheral vision) Meditation , which is a Hawaiian meditation. It involves letting your gaze fall naturally on an imagined spot on the wall in front of you. As you keep your focus lightly on that spot, begin to take your awareness to the edges of your visual field. You can even imagine that you are “seeing” behind you, and developing 360 degree vision. This could be how you see your worlds in a meditative state. ;)
