How we are failing our nation’s pets
As the co-founder of Paw Prints in the Sand, a nonprofit animal rescue, I am a huge animal lover and advocate. I’ll take animals over people any day. They don’t judge, criticize, gossip, disappoint you, or fail you.
However, because we are human, we all too often fail them, many times without even a second thought. We toss them out like trash when we move, have a baby, get a new job or lose the one we have, get married, get divorced, death in the family, or have any life transition, really.
My favorites are excuses like: The dog went potty on the floor, or the new cat can’t figure out the litter box. Or the best we’ve heard yet: “We have to surrender our dog because it’s too small and can’t jump up on the bed.” WTF?! If the dog is that small, you can’t pick him or her up? Or get doggie stairs, you lazy piece of shit!
Sidenote: I hate when someone calls a pet “it”. It connotes detachment, indifference, and a complete lack of sensitiveness. I know that is not always the case. It’s just my pet peeve (pun intended).
