If you have an online business, chances are you’ve seen posts by fellow entrepreneurs that go something like this:
“I just launched my offer last night and have made $30,000 in less than 24 hours with no ads, no emails, and half a brain.”
This leaves those of us who actually have a whole brain scratching our heads. At first you’re like “Wow! That’s incredible!”
Then you’re like: “How the F%&K did they do that??”
I’m here to let you in on a dirty little secret, my friends: It’s all smoke and mirrors.
On average, it takes two to three years for a business to become profitable. Just because someone made $30k in sales in one day, it doesn’t mean they are profitable. The could (and likely do) have overhead such as staff, office space, internet, phone, shipping, and utilities. They still have to pay taxes on it. If they did spend money on ads, then they have to slice ad costs off the top of that number as well. Then they need to factor in other services such as subscriptions, e.g. Clickfunnels, MailChimp, LearnDash, Keap, LeadPages, web and email hosting, etc. These costs add up on a monthly basis, so when all is said and done, they may be just breaking even or in the negative.
Now, let’s talk about this whole misconception of it happening “overnight”. It didn’t. It takes A LOT of work to get to the place where you can make $30,000 in just 24 hours. It takes a lot of trial and error. It takes growing an audience whether you do it organically or not. If you do go the organic route, then it takes even longer. People didn’t just snap her fingers and suddenly $30k appeared. So many don’t take into account just how much time, energy, and effort goes into making this type of money so quickly.
I saw a post by one coach who launched her first sales funnel and made over $41,000 in 24 hours. People on the thread were asking: “How in the F does this happen?”
I’ll tell you how: She has almost 52,000 followers on her personal Facebook page alone. She had to build that audience, which no doubt took time. She had to build her subscriber base, which also took time. She had to establish credibility, build out her platform; and develop her program.
Now after being in business for a couple years, she has a process she can replicate and so she can continue to prosper. She also has several other businesses. She knew how to promote herself through social channels, SEO, and PR. Her new funnel only augments the systems and offers she already had in place.
Clearly, she’s one smart lady who worked her butt off and earned it, but if you ask her if it happened overnight, I’m sure she’d tell you the truth about how it so didn’t.
Nevertheless, when people see this, and they’re not even close, it can be incredibly discouraging rather than inspirational. It puts a big bright spotlight on their failures and how they’re not even close to that. Yes, that is a mindset issue for them, but all they see is this pie in the sky shit without taking the behind-the-scenes reality into account.
The one thing every single one of these not-so-overnight sensations have in common is an unwavering belief in themselves. They had the vision, the drive; they made sacrifices in the form of not going out with friends or spending time with their family. They worked and worked and worked. They took massive inspired action and would stop at nothing to get to where they wanted to go.
The good news is, you can do this too. Don’t think that just because you’re not there yet that you can’t get there or won’t. You absolutely can! When you have the desire and absolute faith and confidence in yourself, you can move mountains in your life and business. And yes, there’s a little more to it — knowledge/expertise, planning, persistence, imagination, and overcoming those nasty little limiting beliefs, but if you’re willing to completely lean in to it all, then you totally got this, my friend, and soon you will be the one posting about how you made $40K is less than 24-hours. Tag me when you do. I love reading about people’s successes in life and how they got there!
