It’s so easy, even your grandmother could do it

Our lives are ruled by technology, and I am not just talking about smartphones and computers. Domotics (home automation or smart home) has taken over our lives. We have everything from smart refrigerators, smart sprinkler systems, and smart heating and cooling. We even have smart workouts that are streamed, live, and on-demand with a fancy-schmancy bike.

While these ‘smart’ concepts may be easy to grasp when simplified in layman’s terms, being able to actually explain them or any complex concept in writing so your audience understands them is an art form.

In 1999, when I was first starting out in tech PR and was about to launch the first wireless routers in the U.S., I knew I had my work cut out for me. It was all new. Wi-Fi wasn’t even a ubiquitous term. The 802.11 protocol, i.e. an engineering standard for implementing a wireless computer network, was just in its second generation. I was tasked with writing content that would explain this in a way that was easily digestible for the everyday computer user. Not an easy feat.

When it comes to simplifying complex concepts, you need to push a lot of buttons and pull levers to ensure your audience is tracking and can walk away with clarity. There is a method to the madness.
