Why I Hate Open-Ended Questions In Social Media Marketing
And how to come across as more genuine and authentic
Look, I get it. You signed up for a course by some social media marketing guru who convinced you that asking open-ended questions in groups or cold DMs was how you scale your business from $0 to $100k months in two weeks.
I’ve been there. I tried that technique and all it did was leave me feeling icky and fake.
These repeatedly copied and pasted,
“What’s been your biggest challenge lately?”
“How do you feel about this?”
“What’s your favorite memory of [insert brand name]?”
While these questions are meant to spark conversation, they often backfire, annoying users instead of engaging them.
Get 10 or more of these “conversation starters” daily. They get cumbersome.
Don’t pretend to be starting a conversation with me when you’re really trying to sell me something.
Here’s a hint: Real relationships work and they still matter.
Sending me a friend request and then shoving your cutesy little, “I'm pretending to care about you and your business” message that ends with a disingenuous open-ended question, is a major pet peeve.
